New Safety Technology Widens Gap between GMC Canyon and Other Midsize Trucks

2015 GMC Canyon Features New Safety Technology for Child PassengersThe 2015 GMC Canyon, when it hits dealerships sometime this coming fall, will be a segment leader in oh-so-many ways. We can expect that it will crank out impressive numbers when it comes to fuel economy, horsepower, torque, and towing capacity, but it’s also got some other tricks up its sleeve—like new safety technology including an all-new patent-pending child safety feature.

The rear passenger headrest on the 2015 Canyon can be removed and plugged in “horizontally into the seat base.” Basically, you can take the headrest out of its normal position and use it to extend the rear jump seat farther. Why is this useful? Doing this allows most car seats to fit at least 80% of their bases on the truck’s seat, allowing the Canyon to better conform to safety recommendations than any other truck.

“It’s an elegant solution that makes efficient use of the limited space in the rear seat in this type of vehicle, by allowing us to adapt the seat cushion length for child restraint installation,” said Eduardo Bugelli, safety performance team lead. “The additional seat cushion length provides more support to the child restraint, which helps to reduce the rotation and the risk of injury in a crash.”
