General Motors is looking to challenge Ford and increase sales of its heavy duty pickups to fleet buyers and municipalities with a new variant of the Chevrolet Silverado. For 2016, the Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD will include a chassis cab with bi-fuel CNG (compressed natural gas) option. While limited to a regular cab configuration, the new model is sure to appeal to its target audience.

Available in both two and four-wheel-drive, the Silverado chassis cab includes both a 24.5 gallon CNG behind the cab and a standard 23.5 gallon gasoline tank. With the bi-fuel truck, Chevrolet is one of only two automakers, the other being Ford, that offer a CNG flex-fuel system.

The bi-fuel chassis cab trucks are set to roll out at the end of 2015 and appeal to fleet buyers and municipalities. Buyers of heavy duty pickups usually purchase large amounts of compressed natural gas to keep at their work or fueling site. Doing so drastically reduces their annual fuel expenses.

Warranty information is much of the same you can find on commercial trucks. The powertrain is protected by a factory limited warranty of five years or 100,000 miles. Unlike other trucks, the warranty covers the CNG fuel system and components. Chevrolet also offers free two year or 24,000 miles regular maintenance under its Chevrolet Complete Care program. Lastly, all CNG parts are available from General Motors dealerships (and online) across the United States and Canada.

While we here at Hutch Chevrolet of Paintsville, KY carry plenty of fuel efficient cars and trucks, we’re happy to see General Motors expanding in the alternative-fuel market!
