Chevy and GMC have hybrid SUVs in the works

2012 EquinoxDriving a family hauler can be expensive to fill up at the gas station and hard on the environment. However, some families cannot avoid driving a large vehicle.  Now, GM is working to eliminate those hefty gas stops in the near future with the new Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain.

GM’s eAssist hybrid system is not only fuel efficient, but it is easy on the environment too. It has already been applied to the Chevy Malibu, Buick LaCrosse, and Buick Regal. The current eAssist system combines a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine with a 15 kilowatt electric motor and 115V lithium-ion battery pack. The eAssist system, previously only released on GM sedans, will now be available on two of GM’s most popular SUVs, the 2014 Chevy Equinox and the 2014 GMC Terrain.

The Terrain and Equinox are both popular midsize SUVs. They are built on the same 2012 GMC Terrainunibody platform and are both expected receiving a mild facelift for the 2013 model year. The eAssist system is expected to be added to both powertrains for 2014.

GM has released pricing for the new fuel efficient Equinox and Terrain similar to the V6 offerings of each SUV. At this rate, hybrid SUVs come without the high hybrid prices therefore making them readily available for any family.
