Those who have had the pleasure of driving a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray know that the new Corvette has a lot to live up to. However, GM and most of the automaker world isn’t worried after the recent reveal of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.
So what’s changed on the Sting Ray after 50 years? We’ve broken it down so you can see exactly what you’re dealing with when driving the all-new Corvette.
Power- The new Stingray is still powered by a V8 but this engine pulls a little more power than the Sting Ray of ’63. The new Corvette will pull 450 hp with the original Sting Ray achieved 250. Bigger engine, higher horsepower, faster ‘Vette.
Efficiency- GM hasn’t released the fuel economy on the new Corvette but they say it will be more efficient than the 6th generation Corvette which achieved 26 mpg highway. That’s quite a jump from the ‘63’s efficiency of 18 mpg highway.
Name- While the all-new Corvette bears the name of the 1960’s classic, it puts its own spin on it. The new Corvette Stingray is one word, while the old Sting Ray was two. The new Corvette plans to make a name for itself when it comes out late this year.
The new Corvette is driven by inspiration of the 1963 classic and while it replicates a few features, the new Corvette plans to become a classic of its own.
It’s the battle of the muscle cars and the Camaro takes the title for the second year in a row. Chevrolet dealers sold more than 84,000 Camaros last year, more than 1,000 more than their rival, the Ford Mustang.
This year was a closer margin than last year where the Camaro blew away the Mustang in 2011 sales. Chevy sold more than 17,000 Camaros than Ford sold Mustangs in all of 2011.
It has always been a tight race between the Camaro and the Mustang but Chevy still proves their cars come out on top. The Camaro is a 2-door car available in with a hard top or as a convertible and has been a staple in the Chevy lineup for more than 50 years. The Camaro is in its 5th generation and is looking to be redesigned in 2015.
